A bathroom renovation is a great way to boost your home’s functionality and comfort, as well as home value and practicality. We have been helping Westchester County homeowners with bathroom remodeling and renovations since our inception – here are some of the answers to the questions we are asked most frequently.
What’s the difference between bathroom renovation and remodeling?
First, both remodeling and renovating mean to make improvements on an existing building, home, or for our purposes a bathroom.
However, the words remodel and renovation each refer to two slightly different types of construction projects. A bathroom renovation, for example, would be a project where you are looking to replace a sink or bathtub or make other modest updates while a bathroom remodeling project could include removing or adding a wall and in most cases, includes changing the footprint of a bathroom.
How long does a bathroom remodeling typically take from start to finish?
Oh, this is a hard one and we hate to say it but all cliche aside, “it-really- depends.” First, we have to define the scope of the bathroom remodeling project. The scope dictates how long the project will take from start to finish.
For example, are we relocating rearranging the fixtures and reconfiguring the entire room? Is there any actual construction? Like adding or removing a wall, skylight or adding ventilation? That will, of course, take a little bit longer. In very general terms, even the most technical bathroom remodeling projects will be completed within two and a half to three and a half months.
Here’s a sample timeline of an imaginary bathroom remodeling project that does not include relocating fixtures:
- The first consultation: we meet and talk about your goals and design ideas. Then we draft our proposal – 1 week.
- We meet, have a cup of coffee and finalize the scope of the project, define our terms and draft a Project Agreement – within the week.
- Together we select all the materials needed for the project – you may begin this step ahead of time. But, if not – 1 to 2 weeks.
- Materials are ordered and delivered – about 2 weeks.
- Demolition and removal of your old bathroom and appliances – 5 days or less.
- Then we get to work and install the new materials, appliances, flooring and get all the plumbing and electrical work completed before painting – this really depends on the size and scope of the job.
- Finishing touches and clean up – 1 to 2 weeks.
How much lighting will my bathroom need?
If you’ve ever lived in a home with poor lighting, you’ll understand how important lighting is. Especially in the bathroom, a single ceiling fixture is never going to create enough light.
You need enough lighting to shave, apply makeup, and shower. Consider vanity lighting and a secondary source for your shower area.
Will my bathroom need more ventilation?
In a bathroom, ventilation is critical as the size of your bathroom increases the likelihood of mildew and mold.
During the planning phase, we will go over the space requirements and ensure your bathroom is adequately ventilated. We commonly install bathroom fans to help protect bathrooms from natural fungi.
